If you’re getting into PC gaming, chances are you’ll realize that some games are simply better played with a controller. While playing a PC first-person shooter with a controller is a crime against humanity in some jurisdictions, playing other games (especially platformers and third-person action games) with a controller is just fine.

As I’ve covered in a previous article, the Xbox One controller is a pretty solid option for PC gaming. Here’s how you can connect an Xbox One controller to a PC.

How to Connect an Xbox One Controller To a PC (Windows)

In December of 2005 two things happened: The Xbox 360 launched, and Microsoft introduced XInput to Windows XP SP1. In every version of Windows since then XInput has been integrated into the operating system to such an extent that any controllers supporting XInput are automatically recognized upon connection and don’t require the download of extra drivers in order to get working.

XInput controllers, as you may have guessed, include the Xbox One controller and the Xbox 360 controller. There’s also a variety of gamepads from other manufacturers that support XInput like Logitech’s F710 and SteelSeries’ Stratus XL.

Because of XInput, all you really need to worry about when it comes to connecting an Xbox pad on Windows is getting it connected. Here’s how to connect an Xbox One controller to a PC.

Wireless

Wireless controllers are a bit more tricky than wired, though this probably isn’t very surprising. In order to get a Wireless Xbox One controller connected to your PC, you’ll need to have an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows or a Bluetooth adapter.

With an Xbox Wireless Adapter

Fortunately, you shouldn’t need to do much work with this one. Simply plug the Xbox Wireless Adapter into a USB port on your PC, then hold down the Sync button on both the controller and the adapter until your controller syncs up.

If this doesn’t work, you’ll need to dive into your settings. Open your Start Menu, then type “Bluetooth” and select “Bluetooth and Other Devices Settings.”

Click “Add Bluetooth or other device.”

Now, click “Everything else”.

Select your controller, and you’re all good.

With a Bluetooth Adapter

To connect an Xbox One controller to Windows via Bluetooth, you’ll need to have updated to Windows 10 Anniversary Update. If you haven’t updated Windows 10 or are on an older version of Windows, you’ll need to buy an Xbox Wireless Adapter or a compatible USB cable to connect with a wired connection.

If you are on the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, feel free to continue.

Similar to how we started with the other method, you’ll want to start, type “Bluetooth” and select “Bluetooth and other devices settings.”

Make sure you have Bluetooth switched to On.

Hold the Sync button on your Xbox One controller for three seconds, then release it.

Select Xbox Wireless Controller, then Pair.

Congrats! You got your Xbox One Controller working on your PC.

Wired

On Windows 7 and up? Just plug it in! Try other USB ports or install this software if that doesn’t work.

How to Connect an Xbox One Controller To a PC (Linux)

In order to connect an Xbox One Controller to a Linux PC, you’ll need to take some extra steps. Namely, you’ll need to be using an Ubuntu or Ubuntu-based distribution. If this sounds like you, check out Derrik’s article on setting up an Xbox One Controller in Ubuntu!

Conclusion

And that’s it! Unless something is seriously wrong with your PC, its components or your Xbox One Controller, you should be able to connect to your PC just fine.

Luckily, a hobbyist developer named Lucas Assis has developed a temporary Xbox One controller driver for Windows 7 and 8. It doesn't work on Windows RT, so this won't help regular Surface users. His solution requires the use of several companion programs (bundled with the driver) and a few quarts of elbow grease, but it does actually work. Until now, you’d have to endure a somewhat painful tutorial video in order to guide you through the process. Lucky for you guys, I’ve gone through that already so that we can bring you this easy-to-understand written guide!

Part One

  • First download the driver package from Lucas's OneDrive. This includes the driver, vJoy, X360CE, and LibUSB.

Part Two

  • Connect your Xbox One controller to the computer via micro-USB cable/
  • Head to Device Manager. On Windows 8, right-click the Start Menu, select Control panel, and Device Manager.
  • Xbox One controllers show up under Other devices as 'Controller.' They can't normally be installed because Microsoft still hasn't released drivers for them.
  • Select the Controller and click Update Driver.
  • Choose 'Browse my computer for driver software'
  • Click 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'
  • Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus devices
  • Select WinUSB Device and answer yes to the Update Driver Warning.
  • Repeat this process for any additional Xbox One controllers you connect.

Part Three

  • Launch XboxOneDriverApp.exe (found in the App folder of the driver package).
  • For each detected controller, one Xbox symbol lights up in the app. If using more than eight controllers (!), check the “Additional gamepads” box.
  • Enable the “Trigger button” option for games that don’t otherwise support the analog triggers.

Part Four

  • Install vJoy. You can select not to install the Feeder component, but the Configuration component is required.
  • Launch the vJoy application file vJoyConf.exe.
  • Select the options in the screenshot above and click Apply.
  • If connecting more than one controller, repeat the settings and change the target device number for each controller.
  • Return to Control Panel and search for joy. Choose “Set up USB game controllers” from the search results.
  • Select the controller(s) from the Game Controllers list and verify that Windows detects your inputs.
  • If everything works, close the Game Controllers list and close vJoyConf.

Part Five

Driver
  • Install LibUSBDotNet. You can select not to install the Source and Example code. Make sure you select to install LibUSB with filter capabilities on the next screen.
  • Finish the installation and allow the first installer to launch the filter installer wizard.
  • Select “Install a device filter” and select the WinUSB device(s) from the top of the list. Choose Install and hit OK.
  • Close LibUSB.

Part Six (optional)

  • If you want the Xbox One controller to be detected as an Xbox 360 controller in games that support it (most modern controller-enhanced games), you also need to install X360CE and run it alongside XboxOneDriverApp.
  • Windows 8 users: Before launching the program, right click it and choose to run it in Windows 7 compatibility mode and “Run this program as an administrator.”
  • When first launching the app, it will ask if you want to create a DLL. Click Yes.
  • You can now test and configure the buttons for each controller.
  • Change the settings to those shown in the screenshot above.

Done!

If everything worked properly, your Xbox One controllers will now work on your PC or Windows 8 tablet! Launch a few games with controller support and enjoy the ergonomic comfort that only a well-designed controller can provide.

For some, a controller is the only way to play games. If you’re not of the keyboard and mouse generation, or just don’t like how floaty a mouse can feel and how rigid keyboard controls can feel, then a controller is the only way to go. There are hundreds of third-party controllers on the market, but if you have an Xbox, you can use your Xbox One controller on your PC.

Given that Microsoft owns both Xbox and Windows 10, it isn’t surprising that the two play nicely together. Microsoft is aware that a lot of people prefer to use a controller even when they aren’t playing on a console, and they’re actively bringing Xbox and Windows closer with UWP apps, Xbox mode in Windows 10, and upgrades to the Xbox that will make it play nicely with Windows. Including the XInput API into Windows core helps, too.

Both wired and wireless Xbox One controllers will work on a Windows PC, so even if you only have one or the other, you’re still good to try this out.

Use an Xbox One controller on a PC

To use your Xbox One controller on your PC, you will obviously need a controller, an internet connected PC, and ten minutes of your time. The controller will either be USB, wireless, or Bluetooth. All will work with Windows.

Wired Xbox One controller

The wired controller is the easiest to get working with a PC. The controller comes with a USB cable for charging, so all you need do is plug one end into your PC and the other into the controller. If you are using Windows 10, it should automatically detect the controller and ready it for use.

My Windows 10 installation downloaded and installed the drivers automatically. It took care of everything and the controller was ready in a few seconds. That’s because Windows 10 has the Xbox drivers installed as part of the Xbox accessories app.

If you use Windows 8, you will need to manually update the Device Manager.

  1. Connect your Xbox One controller to your PC and let it be detected by Windows.
  2. Right click the Windows Start button and select Device Manager.
  3. Navigate to the Microsoft Xbox One controller entry.
  4. Right click, select Update Driver Software and let Windows automatically download and install the drivers.

If everything goes according to plan, then you should be good to start playing without any further fuss. But if automatic download doesn’t work, Techspot has the drivers for manual install.

Wireless Xbox One controller

To get a wireless Xbox One controller working, you will need a wireless adapter. The Xbox One should have one included, but you can buy one separately if you need to. They’re not the cheapest dongle you can get your hands on–it costs over half the price of the controller itself–but if you keep an eye open you might be able to find one secondhand, too.

Plug the wireless adapter into your PC and let Windows pick it up. If it doesn’t, try a different USB port. Windows should detect the adapter and install any drivers necessary to run it.

Then hold the Xbox button on the controller to turn it on and press the button on the adapter to make it search for the controller. Press the Bind button near the top of the controller and watch the blinking light. Once it stops blinking and goes solid, the controller and adapter have paired and you should be able to use it right away.

Bluetooth Xbox One controller

Download Xbox 360 Controller Driver For Windows 8

If you have the latest Xbox One controller, you may have Bluetooth capability. If that’s the case and your PC has a Bluetooth dongle or controller, you can use that to pair the two if you wish.

To get it working:

  1. Turn on your Xbox One controller and place it close to your PC.
  2. Navigate to Settings in Windows, then Devices.
  3. Enable Bluetooth and wait for Windows to load the dependencies.
  4. Press the Bind button at the top of the controller.
  5. When the controller appears in the list of Devices, select Pair.

The process is quite painless, considering this is Microsoft we are talking about. As long as your PC is running the Windows 10 Anniversary Update and has a functioning Bluetooth controller, it should be simple to connect the two devices.

Update your controller

If things don’t go quite to plan, or you like to stay current, you may want to update the Xbox One controller. You can do this via your Xbox One, as you might imagine, but you can also update it via the Xbox Accessories app within Windows. Once connected, your controller will be analyzed by the app and you may see an ‘Update Required’ message on the screen.

Follow the update wizard in the app to complete the process. It only takes a couple minutes and will take care of everything for you. Once updated, your Xbox One controller will be ready to use.

Using your Xbox One controller on your PC is very straightforward, even in the worst case scenario. Best case scenario is plug and play, with Windows taking care of everything automatically. Even if it doesn’t, updating drivers and pairing devices only takes a few minutes, and then you can game as hard as you like!
