Worst Auto Tune Artists

Bob Dylan may have been a poet, a 60s troubadour who influenced rock music for the next three decades, but he sure couldn’t sing. He also may have unknowingly inspired many bad singers to believe that they could do the same thing as long as they had three chords and the truth.

Once, it was known as the genre responsible for sending mothers all across the country into fits of worry over the fear that it might compel their kids to grow up and join a gang or, God forbid, date a black person. It was dangerous. I’ve covered some off-key artists before — people who just can’t hold a tune to save their lives. But there are others who, despite singing every note on pitch and on the beat, can make cats wail, dogs howl and donkeys bray uncontrollably. They possess the talent to craft songs, play guitar/piano, and maybe even juggle, but in some cruel fate of irony, they were cursed with a voice that turns stomachs.

They are the worst voices in rock. And I had to cut it to 10.

#10 – Chris Martin, Coldplay

At times, Martin sounds okay. But most of the time, he sounds as if he really needs to blow his nose. It’s a sinus infection, maybe, or a persistent allergy, but it’s chronic. A Neti pot would help.

#9 – Nico

I will digress for a moment here and note the lack of female artists on this list. Why is that? Why is it that male artists can sound like a giraffe in heat, but almost every female voice sounds like an angel? I guess it’s sexist, or maybe females overall have better voices than us men. With that said, I give you 1960s starlet Nico, who sounds like a guy, therefore she’s eligible for the list.

#8 – Justin Vernon, Bon Iver

Whenever our neighbors leave town for a few days, their dog, left outside, howls this mournful bray that lasts for minutes, trailing off in loneliness before it starts again. I imagine that this is what it’s like to be at a performance by Bon Iver, whom LA Weekly describes as “the sonic equivalent of an empty canvas tote bag.” If left alone with a Bon Iver CD playing, I might do the same thing as our neighbors’ dog.

#7 – Tom Waits

At one time, Waits had a voice that sounded like he had been through a few late night benders – raw, throaty and seasoned. Now he’s a parody of himself. The death rattle of Cookie Monster oozing up from the sewers, waiting to capture children and eat them.

#6 – Mike Love, the Beach Boys

Worst Autotune Artists Names

He’s on this list mostly because of his whiny, nasally voice, which sticks out like a sore thumb in every Beach Boys song that he participated in. It’s partly because of his odd, shuffling dance movements when he sang live (to be replaced by his odd use of hand signals to explain every lyric in his later years). But it’s partly because I hate Mike Love.

#5 – The entire Gibb clan

Worst Autotune Artists Of All Time

Every damn one of them. In their natural register, they sounded like a herd of goats being slaughtered. Their upper registers break glass and make dogs cock their heads unnaturally.

#4 – Brad Roberts, Crash Test Dummies

Every time I hear a Crash Test Dummies song on the radio I dive for the power button, dial, power cord — anything to stop the foghorn voice of Brad Roberts from vibrating the speakers and my eardrums. His voice is just a gimmick — yes, it’s low. Yes, it can go even lower. But it’s so. Damn. Creepy.

#3 – Rob Thomas, Matchbox 20

Thomas represents every yawping, Pearl-Jam-wannabe alternative-rock lead singer: Someone wanting to bathe us in their masculinity by oversinging so much that it borders on shouting. Thomas takes it further by ovER eNUNciatinG EVeryTHING, as if he were to attempting to talk while chewing a bar of Laffy Taffy. The only thing I could ever decipher from the lyrics of his hit with Santana, “Smooth”(“Give me your heart, make it real / Or else forget about it”), was “Dimmy yo are effor me or es foGEDABOUDEHuT”. I got the last part right. Sort of.

#2 – Dave Matthews

The common ancestor of Chris Martin and Rob Thomas — yawping with nasal congestion.

#1 – Bob Dylan, senior citizen

The incoherent Dylan from the 1960s that we all imitate has given way to a more reedy, Waits-like voice decimated by cigarettes — as if someone with one of those electronic voice boxes tried to sing. Oh my god — It just hit me. His voice is the love child of the Bee Gees, Tom Waits and Chris Martin – bleating, rough and nasal. All of those voices encompassed into one hast be the worst of the worst voices in rock.

Each year, musicians bring in millions of dollars in record sales and live performances. People love listening to their favorite songs, and good singing easily draws people in. But with that being said, it’s ironic that some of the most famous singers in the business actually don’t sing that well at all. Thanks to recording studios, even people with awful voices can be made to sound like they’ve got a set of golden pipes, but if you’ve attended any concerts you probably know that there are some people who just don’t have the same effect while performing live. While these people possess other qualities that have made them successful, their singing voices just aren’t one of those things. Here are 10 of the most successful musicians with the worst voices.

Cassie

In 2006, Cassie’s “Me & U” was a huge hit, and everyone thought she was going to have a successful career. However, it quickly became obvious that Cassie didn’t really have the vocal chops to make it as a singer. Unfortunately for Cassie, it seems like almost everyone has been critical of her voice, and many people – even some of her fans – believe that the only reason she found fame in the first place is because of her looks.

Ke$ha

Almost everyone loves Ke$ha’s songs. If you’ve never caught yourself accidentally singing along to one, chances are you’re lying. But even with all of the people who love her songs, there aren’t many who are willing to declare that she has a good singing voice. However, on the bright side – there’s a pretty good chance that Ke$ha isn’t in the business because she thinks she has the best singing voice, she just loves entertaining her fans and having a good time with everything she does.

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys is a very talented songwriter and musician. She’s penned some awesome songs, and worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. However, despite her immense talent, Alicia Keys voice isn’t nearly as amazing as you’d expect it to be. It’s not that she sounds awful or anything, but she always seems to sound like she’s straining. Although some people say her voice is just a part of her unique style, it all just sounds like an excuse to make up for the fact that she really can’t sing.

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez has had a very successful singing career, which is very interesting because she’s not a great singer. If you ask people what they like most about Lopez, you’ll get a lot of answers, but there probably won’t be anyone who says her singing voice. Like many other pop artists, J.Lo has been able to get by on a very soft and sub par singing voice. Ironically, Lopez is now a job on the popular Fox competition series, American Idol, where she loves providing contestants with feedback on the quality of their voice. Sure, she definitely knows a thing or two about what it’s like to be in the spotlight – and as a result could definitely offer an important perspective – but she might want to leave the vocal coaching to someone else.

Jason Derulo

Jason Derulo has plenty of hits, and his loyal fans love his energy while performing. However, most people outside of his fan club believe that Jason Derulo tries entirely too hard and after all that, still can’t hold a note. Derulo also relies heavily on auto-tune, an effect that some artists use to make their voices sound computerized. Although Derulo once stated, “I can actually sing…I don’t need auto-tune,” many people disagree. Some who have left his live performances were disappointed with his inability to sing.

Adam Levine

As the front man for one of the biggest pop rock groups on the scene, many people believe that Adam Levine’s vocals just aren’t that great. Although Levine has several years of vocal training, many people find that kind of hard to believe. Over the last few years especially, people have been pointing out that he never seems to deliver during live performances, and that his singing voice possesses an unnecessary and annoying nasal quality.

Selena Gomez

It’s shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Selena Gomez isn’t a great singer. In fact, her fans probably don’t even think that she has a nice voice. Her success can be attributed largely attributed to a few simple facts: she’s young and she’s attractive. However, although she may not have the best singing voice, Gomez is talented in other ways. She seems to be a pretty good song writer, and is also a good actress.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry has been climbing to the top since the release of her debut single “I Kissed a Girl.” However, although her popularity has increased, it definitely hasn’t been because of her singing voice. Although it is not uncommon for stars – even those who can sing – to lip sync during some live performances, a malfunction that occurred while Perry was performing her hit song “Roar” made it clear that singing live is definitely a struggle for the pop star.

Britney Spears

Britney Spears may be one of the biggest pop stars of her generation, but let’s be real – even you can probably sing better than Britney Spears. However, Spears was lucky to find a sound that works for her – where she’s able to always sort of sing in the same place. Unfortunately though, she’s just one of those people who needs to be especially thankful for studios and audio engineers because without those things, who knows that she would sound like.

Rihanna

Rihanna is currently one of the most popular artists in the game, but she has kind of built a reputation for butchering her own songs while performing live. Although her recorded tracks sound great, her live performances just seem to be lacking – and many people are unpleasantly surprised when they actually hear sing. It’s not that she sounds terrible, but she definitely doesn’t have the kind of voice you’d expect a Grammy Award winning artist to have.
